Some of us, who have both types like the XC500 and they are good value too. Expect to pay decent coin for a CR.

X2 for cracks on the rims. I found the aluminium in the Nordisk rims can be easily TIG welded. I picked up an 86 WR400 yesterday and same deal, cracked on the join.
 Alot of parts are available and are interchangable between other model Huskies. Parts are no more expensive than some of the Jap stuff and alot of the reproduction parts are of good quality.
  Check around the front sprocket area, as the rear sprocket cover mount is usually broken after a derailment and they crack on the left case at the top just infront of the kick start shaft but so far I have only seen this on the watercooled models.

500 power wars..

Husky always had the smaller engines for their open class, initially the 390 which then became the 430 after pressure from customers watching the japs go 400 - 465 and 500.
Husky responded with the "beast", the 82.5  500 which was a monster. 40 - 50 HP straight off idle, 160Km's flat out straight out of the crate. After receiving different feedback than expected, lots of work went on 83 84 taming the big beast and trying to make it usable.

Unless your 6'4, built like a brick sh*t house and love an epileptic motorbike underneath you, go the 430. You can crack the throttle hard and maintain some vestige of control!

The bikes are dead simple and as a kawasaki dealer said to me years ago when i had the wr 240 in the back of the ute. "f#ck, only a handful of nuts and bolt hold the damn thing together!"

Bearings are std SKF sizes and can be bought anywhere. lots of factory info on Cafe husky website and lots of husky nuts that can help.

Mick at Bendigo Dirt Bikes has husky stuff coming out his ears so a great source of info and bits.

Want a big Husky, get an early xc 510 4 banger, they were unreal.....

No need for hip replacement due to starting a 500 Husky if you fit a decomp device. Makes it easier than kicking a 125 over. Just make sure you keep an eye on how tight they are screwed in as I had one vibrate out of my 500 mid race. It made a hell of a bang and the bike stopped dead. Thought I had blown the engine, busted a rod or some other horrible fate. An eagle eyed flaggie saw where it landed in the grass and after screwing it back into the head I was back in business in time for the next moto ::) ::). Lesson learned was buy a long reach socket so you can tighten them up properly. The multigrips didn't do the job very well!

I prefer my 500 to my 430 but then again it is a 500 auto and I am getting old ;D ;D

Decompressors are practical agreed, but could not imagine factory works bike being fitted with them due to potential loss of performance problems be it by valve leakage or unscrewing. There is enormous pressure on the valve when a big bore is being used in extreme anger in my view.

Somehow loss of performance from a 500 2 stroke doesn't strike me as much of a problem for the average VMXer  ;D ;D Definitely another thing on the bike to look after but if you have ever arrived at the start line absolutely knackered or missed the start because your big bore was hard to start then you won't care about anything else other than making that big girl easier to kick over. 125 and 250 riders have it easy :D
