Understand where you are coming from I tend to live on a staple diet of diclofenac, I wonder if I'll have any stomach lining in years to come. My ankle not to your point yet but then I am just a youngster (damn those next 7 years could be interseting). What ever you do I hope it goes well. Have finished off the godden frame and onto the gearbox and wheels now. Not setting the aim too high but I would like an outing at the DT Nats as my first ride back. Hope to be the one easily identifiable, as the sweep rider at the tail of the field.Maybe we just need to employ our own VMX doctor like the GP circuit.

I had bi-lateral knee replacements done on both knees about 6 years ago, best thing I ever had after 21 previous knee operations to trim remove meniscus & pieces on broken knee joint.

Bi-lateral replacement is the replacement of the outside half of the knee joint; this is the faster wearing part of the joint, having this type of op first for an active motorcycle racer is a good idea as it it leaves a full knee replacement for when that finally fails.

I have been active practising at Frankston MX track on a CR125 & CCM400 and racing my GSXR1000 since having then done and they are still great.

I mainly got it done so I could ben my knees further with high mount pegs on my roadrace bike.  A couple of years ago I crashed at Phillip Island and broke my left Tibia and ripped off my fibula but the knee joint is still going strong.

I don't like to tell people about my surgeon as it increases the waiting list when I want to see him lol. It is David Young at Melbourne Orthopedic Group.

I think Freaky means Dementia.
First sign of Dementia, your spelling goes.
That's 2 for the Dementia class, only need 4 more for a title event.

Dunno about fusing your ankle, sounds a bit like welding a sprocket on.
We can compensate for all sorts of injuries but constant pain is a hard one to deal with.
Even so I would be looking for a second opinion on the ankle, there may be someone out there that can rebuild it. Have you got private cover?

My mother had both knee joints replaced in the late 70’s because of arthritis.
They told her at the time the joints were only good for 7 years and they would have to be redone, no doubt they would have improved since then.
At the time they didn’t come with knee caps so she could never kneel down again. Would today’s joints be any different?

It was in the early nineties (with the original joints still in and working fine) when she had a fall and developed an infection in one knee. She was in hospital for some time, we thought we were going to lose her she was so bad with the infection. The problem was that the infection was in the false joint and as there was no blood flow into the false joint none of the antibiotics they were pumping her with could reach the infection to work. Eventually they had to remove both knee joints for a couple of weeks so they could get rid of the infection and then fit her with new knee joints again.

They're exactly the reasons why I didn't consider a shoulder joint replacement nearly 10 years ago. No1 they had a limited lifespan and I was still too active, No2 they hadn't, and still haven't perfected them. Hip's & knees can function pretty good swinging through the one plane but shoulders are pretty much like a uni - joint.
Pain management is a constant battle and does wear extremely thin at times.
If I eventually qualify for the Dememtia class at least I may forget about the pain of the past.

For rosco who's having trouble with Gout.  Gout is caused by a build up of acid in the body. Usually as a result of consuming an excess of acidic foods.  Like booze, coffee, tea, sugar etc..  You can get rid of gout by removing or limiting the intake of acidic food and eating more alkaline foods.

Do a Google search if you need to know more.

I've had about four different surgeons check the ankle out and they all give the same prognosis.....it's rooted and the only "cure" is to fuse it. It's not that much of a jump from where it's at now, I have about 25mm of total movement at best, none at the worst, the difference being that the pain will hopefully end once it's fused. The one option yet to try is the ankle replacement specialist who's coming back from America in August/September. She's supposedly a world leader in such surgery and my specialist is her practice partner and he wants her to look it over before any final decisions are made. Meanwhile I have yet another surgeon checking it out on the 6th. All I know is that I'm pretty damn sick of limping around and of the pain and that being dependant on pain killers 24/7 is getting me down big time. I just want it all to go away. :'(

Crash n Bern
Lived with gout for 12 years now and tried about everything. Mine is triggered by dehydration so it is easy to draw the parallel to alcohol and some trigger foods. While it is excess acid build up it is also related to arthritis and like most things weight and exercise. Used pro-gout for 5 years and suffered the onset of a cateract which is one of the known side effects. Not willing to risk the other eye as while atifical lenses ae good they are not like the real thing. Losing weight and doing more exercise sounds easy but if you are in constant pain it is very difficult to acieve. Hard to explain gout to someonewho hasn't had it. Have been is such chronic pain that at times I have thought amputation may be an answer, but after a week things settle for a little while. I have a degee in Sport Science and so I understand all the correct principles for living a good life but obviosly can blame my ancestors for the lower self control gene. Then again if I had that I wouldn't have ridden motorcycles (ever talked to medical practitioners about this type of recreation?)
