CZ spokes V S/Steel
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:20:43 PM »
If restoring a CZ, should one have the original spokes re-chromed or is it better to replace them with modern stainless steel spokes? New S/Steel spokes are easy to get and use. Is having the old spokes chromed work or does it chip and peel at the threads? Is there some one in Australia that knows how to do it properly without arguments and do-overs? How much would it cost for the chroming as a set of new S/S spokes and nipples only cost $155.00.

the spokes on the german Adlers are Chromed and i have re-chromed them. only do it if the spokes are in good conditio to start with and heavy rusting hasnt gone into the metal. if done correctly it wont peel or clog up the threads. the threads can be masked off so no chrome clogs them up, but i have had many fine threads chromed before with not problems. the good chromers know not to give a thick coating that will clog up the threads.

I guess it all depends on the bikes end use.
If racing the bike S/S may be the go but if she is to be a super model chroming the existing spokes my be more appropriate.
Does the chrome last a few years if racing the bike?
Can you have the nipples chromed or just use new ones?

Hi LWC,
The new steel spokes that you suggest do they match the OEM CZ's or are they just an aftermarket spoke like the S/S ones?

Thanks Ji
