Thanks Rookie. The XR isn't restored, just a good clean survivor that's had a bit of TLC. I put the pipe on as it had one of those horrible supertrapp things on it. I modified the airbox intake so it can breathe. 40mm Mikuni carb. Trap door throttle. Bigger cam. Recoed the head, new piston rings and put the plastic CR fuel tank on. Even managed to score a brand new 23" front tyre! All I need to do now is get a slightly taller seat foam made up to match the rear of the tank a bit better and for better handle bar/footpeg/seated ergo's. It's a real nice bike to ride....

Thanks Bill. Yes it does, heaps better looking than the original steel tank and a hell of a lot lighter. The tunnel of the tank took a bit of reshaping with the heat gun but I was determined to make it fit the XR. I got the tank for another project but I didn't like it on that particular bike.

so was that the first of the XRs (small ones) with the laid down shocks and moulded side plates or the second.  Can remember my brother getting the first model but for the life of me can't remember whether that was a 75 or 80???

The first laid down shock XR's were the 1977 XR75. It was the first of the 5 speeds as well. I had Brand new '77 XR75 as a kid.
Here's a pic of an original 1977 XR75 that I ended up restoring a bit later. I don't know what happened to the pics of the restored bike  :o

thats it TBM - my brother got a brand new one - I had a Bert Kingston equipped 75 and just loved the 77 one with the 5 speed - thanks
