Vintage Track / Re: 2013 Classic Dirt Track Champs - Main Thread
« on: July 26, 2013, 05:35:26 pm »
Ash, another dumb question - is it $150 1st class, $30 2nd class, $30 3rd and 4th classes, additional classes after 4 no charge? ie Entry fee is capped at $210 for 3 or more classes? Or is it just $30 for every additional class after the first one?

I'm looking for a standard pipe from a 77 or 78 CR125M Elsinore - for a racer not a showroom queen so doesn't need to be perfect. Also looking for the cylinder exhaust flange to suit. Need postage to South Australia. Please pm me with details.

Ok we gotta keep up with the Classic Dirt Track pic thread.  ;)  ;D
Heres one from David Fullston..I keep going back to this pic with the kid in the rails, the start gate style, mouth guards, helemt peaks and good quality leathers along with good quality riders  8)
Not the best copy but a good Aussie shot !! more info greatly appreciated  :)

About to start Dave Fullston's Husky 400 #1 is a youthful looking ace tuner Jon "Hawkeye" Hawkins ( ex Ivan Miller). With a tank full of methanol, and a carby slide full of nitro, you can see that his hand is nowhere near the throttle as he starts the bike. Once Dave gives it a big rev on the line, the sponge above the throttle slide is compressed, the nitro is squirted into the carby and holeshot city here we come. We always wondered why Hawkeye never revved the bikes on the line after starting them.
Although my memory is not so good, I think Dave Fullston dominated in SA on this bike in 1977, winning the A grade star and the #1 plate for 1978. Although living in Qld now, last year he flew back to SA for the State VMX titles at Acusa Park and won the Evo 250 title on one of Don Bowey's CR250RZ's.
Jon Hawkins still lives in Adelaide but is over tuning bikes and is now an electrician with his own successful business. Presume that this shot ( and the next one with Dave as #01 alongside Steve Gall) is from Mr. Motocross series somewhere in Victoria in 1978?

General Discussion / Re: Deep Purple's Jon Lord dies aged 71
« on: July 18, 2012, 12:31:53 pm »
Was too young/poor to see Deep Purple live but the first single record I ever bought was Black Night as a 12 yo in 1970, and they ( along with Led Zep) remained my favourite bands. At 17 I bought the cassette of Made in Japan and wore it out playing on road trips to MX events all over SA. Saw Jon Lord in October last year at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide when Adelaide Symphony Orchestra played Deep Purple. Went along prepared to be disappointed but it was fantastic. He explained and performed Concerto for Group and Orchestra in the first half, then Vince Contarino and the Zep Boys played all Deep Purples hits with the orchestra in the second half. Jon Lord joined them for Smoke on the Water as the finale encore. Great night, forced my 13 and 15 year olds to come along and see a real rock legend. Since they knew most of the songs from me playing of Made in Japan at full noise late at night, they really enjoyed it. RIP Jon.

Competition / Re: 2012 Classic MX Championships

Whos Robin Groom ? your Tiler or your Courier freaky  ;D

" Who's Robin Groom?" Here's a bit of Nats history ......
Steve and Mike Groom were top Husqvarna riders from SA who competed all over Australia throughout the 1970's. Mike won the Australian 500cc title at Tivoli in 1970, and was runner up in the 250cc title at Clarendon in 1971. Robin's Dad Steve was also a top rider, and still plays high level rugby here in SA in his 60's! Those were the days Dave Basham dominated here in SA, but the Grooms, Jim Dowsett, Chris Hall ( Pirie 593 on here) Lester Rowley and many others gave him a tough time on many occasions.
Robin rode Uncle Mike's original 250cc Husky at Crystal Brook last year at the Nats, and won the 30 to 39 age title. He and Steve Melvin ( Alison's son) won a heat each of the pre 75 250, and were dicing it out for the title in the 3rd heat when Robin threw a chain on the final lap. Steve and Mike were both there to see him ride Mike's bike, and it was great to see them both after 25 years - although I still struggled to tell them apart or understand their accents.
Robin comes from a great scrambles/MX background.... grandfather Frank Franklin was the legendary track announcer in SA in the 70's and 80's, grandmother Jean Franklin was in charge of lap scoring, Mum Pam and Aunty Linda ( Harris) are both long serving officials at the Levis MCC in SA, Uncle Phil Franklin was Australian unlimited sidecar MX champion in 1980, Uncle Tony Cook was a top A grader in the 70's....and as Freaky said sister Shannon runs Revolution timing supplying all the transponders here in SA these days. That's all I know but there's probably much more.
It was great to see a 2nd generation rider competing on the same family bike with such a great history.

Robin is a very nice guy so say G'day to him at the Nat's! I'm sure he's going to try and repeat Uncle Mike's feat and win a National Title in Qld, 42 years later. ( Go the Croweaters!!!)

Marshy, Dougy was wearing my old Rowley Park number 68, you've got one nice shot of him there. Did allright for a 16 year old kid having his first ever ride..stayed upright and smooth..I was also pretty happy to stay upright ( but  certainly was not smooth) having my first ride for 30 years. Very special experience to race against my son in classic Dirt Track, Crystal Brook VMX and classic speedway, all in one year. Even better to still be competitive with him! This could be the last year I'll be beating him so I'm making the most of it!
Those sidecar guys all got their dates mixed up, most of them thought they were at the World Titles at Murray Bridge this weekend rather than the Classic titles...... Crazy stuff, bumping and banging, ramming passengers....just like the old days. Peter Menz was VERY lucky the bike missed him when he had the BIG flip. Fantastic to watch though, and to talk to Ivan Mauger and see him ride again ( although slowly) was an added bonus.
You be careful at Murray Bridge and Renmark on those chairs, and have fun on the 2v.

Freaky that's Kevin Webb in the yellow leathers passing you, for some reason he was last out the gate every start and had to work his way through the field each time. Merv Janke is wearing black leathers with red stripe ( JW on left shoulder)  and was always first out the gate every start and disappeared into the distance in the 2v class! Unfortunately his Jap maggy played up and restricted him to 3rd in the ESO/Jap class. Nigel Sadler was pure class in the 4v upright class, someone said he was once rated #3 in the world? Great night out, ran into lots of people I hadn't seen for 30 years!! ( PS where can we find those photo's?)

Freaky Rowley Park was Friday nights, the best show in town always! Go to www.rowleypark.com for some great pics and stories.
Renmark ( Riverland) and Murray Bridge ( Riverview) alternated Saturday nights, (both still going but almost no bikes any more), plus we also rode Whyalla and Mt. Gambier occasionally on Saturday nights.
Remember Murray Bridge will have the World Speedway Sidecar titles on November 12 this year, be there! Locals Headland / Waters keen to win a 2nd World title, Rocket Waters has recovered from his NZ injuries and is back on the bike with Mick, - plus Mark Mitchell can still go OK for an old bloke! Go the Croweaters!

MSA website: Brian Martin won the 1974 Australian 125cc Championship at Manjimup, Western Australia, on 2 June 1974, riding a Honda CR125 – the first of many local Motocross titles for Honda.

In 1974, Martin was selected to ride the new Honda CR250 and CR125 for NSW distributor Bennett Honda, rewarding them with the National Motocross Championship.

Who is right here? Where can we find the official results ?
