General Discussion / Don't sound right
« on: September 21, 2019, 10:06:04 PM »
I just read that last year 4,135 651 people got married.
I don't want to start any trouble, but shouldn't that be an even number.

What is it fact or fiction?   Tried to find if it is a scam, but can't find anything yet.  Maybe one of you computer wizards might be able to find some info.  The old rule about if it looks to good to be true it probably is.

General Discussion / To good to be true
« on: April 29, 2019, 02:59:46 PM »
That old saying, ( If it looks to good to be true, then it probably isn't ) is probably more true today than it ever was.  About a week ago I purchased a couple of shop vacuum cleaners, that were selling at a great price with free delivery. I did think that this is to cheap to be true, but with the protection of Paypal I took the risk.
Today I received an email from ebay telling me that an unauthorized third party had accessed the sellers account to list this item and it had now been removed from ebay and the transactions cancelled and telling me to contact Paypal for a full refund.
When I made the second purchase, for my brother they had sold 74 of them, so I'm was not the only dope looking on ebay that night, in my defence, I probably would not of made the purchase without the paypal protection.

General Discussion / Digital Readout
« on: February 12, 2019, 10:30:05 AM »
Just fitted a digital readout to my lathe.  I purchased it off ebay brand new and CHEAP. The price is now even cheaper, I looked yesterday and with the ebay discount it was around $195 this incudes the 2 axis display unit, 2 sets of scales to mount on lathe bed and cross slide, all cables and mounting brackets for both scales and display unit and free postage.  This price is less than half what I would of had to pay 12 months ago and the seller is in Sydney and he gives 2 years warranty.  He also has 3 axis DRO's for a milling machine.
The manual that comes with it seems to have a lot of info on what can be done with it when fitted to a Mill but not much on programing it for a lathe,  I had to search Google and YouTube to find out all of the info I needed to have it do what I wanted it to do, but this is common place with these manuals, printed in Chinglish.  I contacted the seller who is Chinese, re the lack of information on programing for a lathe in the manual and he is getting that info from his provider in China and will pass it on to me as well as providing it to all future buyers.  As a token of good will he gave me a $52 refund because I had to wait for that information that's more than 25% of the purchase price.
I checked the accuracy of the unit using a dial indicator and the difference over 25mm was 0.021 mm I think that is less than a thou, which is which is more accurate than I will ever need.

General Discussion / Sharpener finished
« on: January 01, 2019, 05:44:47 PM »
Finished my circular saw blade sharpener today and sharpened a couple of blades.  What a difference, cuts at least as good as when they were new and it didn't cost me a cent, sorry it cost me $7 for a pair of short drawer sliders from Bunnings.  It will sharpen blades from about 75mm up to about 600mm when the slides are extended right out.  I had the little dentists grinder which has plenty of power and the sharpening disc is an old tile cutter I've had for years, the rest was made of old timber and steel that was laying about in the shed.  The angle screwed to the sides are used to hold it down on my work bench.  I use the hold down pins similar to what woodworker use on their wooden benches. I just drilled as heap of holes where needed and they work great, well worth the trouble, I have them in about 4 sizes and they will hold down pieces of timber etc from about 10mm thick up to 100mm or 200mm I have even used them to hold a bike frame and a engine case when needed.

The hold down pins are made from a bit of round bar with a small pad welded on the end.

General Discussion / latest projects
« on: December 26, 2018, 10:23:21 PM »
Over the last couple of weeks I have been working on building myself a decent size disc sander, 15 inch disc mounted directly onto a 2 HP electric motor  I also hooked it up to my dust collecting system

I also decided to build a spot welder as well. Heaps of information on youtube just need to take the transformer out of an old microwave oven, leave the primary winding in place and remove the secondary winding.  Then replace that with a length of battery cable, a bit of fabricating a there it is, and it works as well.

The handle extension looks like a dildo but makes for easier storage when it folds back.  I also used the fan from the microwave to help it run a bit cooler.

Next thing I need is a circular saw blade sharpening machine. It's starting to become expensive to get them done.  Not sure how yet but I'll put up some photos when I get it done

Tech Talk / Amal to Mikuni conversion chart
« on: December 16, 2018, 04:29:11 PM »
I had a book or magazine years ago which had a Amal to Mikuni jet conversion chart in the back.  You still had to do the testing to get the jetting right but it gave you a heads up and a good starting point.
If anyone knows if this type of chart is still available, or can remember what book or mag it was in that would be a big help.

General Discussion / Courts suppressing names.
« on: December 14, 2018, 03:35:56 PM »
I received an email yesterday telling me the name of a public figure, who was convicted of a hideous crime in a Victorian court earlier this week.   Why do courts feel that they have the right to protect these heaps of shit.  Hopefully Derryn Hinch  will use his parliamentary privilege and name this arsehole.
Anyway Hells PELLS Sorry I mean Hells Bells will be ringing for this prick.
I would come straight out and say his name but I don't know how this suppression order effects the ordinary citizen, and if there are any penalties.

This is what can happen when you are pushing at over 50 tons using sockets.  You probably notice that they are not sidchrome. But they were reasonable quality.
