Tech Talk / Re: Leaking carbs

Thanks for that offer YSS, but I don't yet have the need, but was curious and can now file away the knowledge. I have previously wondered about it so it's good to know it can be done.

I'm interested in your lapping tool. What material is it made from ? I've pondered this my self but no amount of beer has ever got me to "the leap of faith"

While vtr has a membership limit non members can request to ride at their events if that event rider limit hasn't been filled by members. Keep an eye on the notices in the vtr post in this forum or if you use facebook request to join the vintagetrailriders facebook group, ride information when rides are 'open' get posted to both places.

Yamaha / Re: Yamaha DT1, I have found a whole new interest & respect

I think Jim Scaysbrook did a test of a factory kitted dt1 when they first came out ???? He won a motocross (natural terrain in those days) championship from memory.

Vinduro / Re: 1977 Yamaha IT 250 rego NSW ?

NSW historic club rego is ~$100 first year, includes the plate cost, then ~$45 per year. But add on the membership cost of the club you must join. You get all your club rides, other clubs rides that are advertised to your club, any ride sanctioned by your club registrar plus (if ypur club is particpating) 60 days per year on a log book (sheet) system.
I've read that bikes that are iffy for normal rego have done a year on historic rego then transtered to normal! I've not known any one do it but maybe its possble?
The trick I guess is to dodge the need for a blue slip, because I assume this is where you'd get unstuck.

It would be interesting to search for the (US?) patent document to see the technicalities.

Greg the 2 answers I got was others have had success with good old fashioned Tarzan's Grip and the blue glue you use to connnect PVC pipes. I bought some of both today and will be trying it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes mate
I've always liked Tarzan's Grip. I suspect it is very similar to the bootmakers glue I got the good oil on for repairing plastic inlet manifolds (its fuel resistant)but I forget the important chemical component ????

The drive chain conversion job was neat. I only remember the one but didn't follow racing very closely. People all said it was for more power to the wheel, but I always thought it was for adjustable final drive ratio.
I had a friend who went thru two, both from new, he did mega miles. Each was traded with 250-300 K km covered. They still ran well and I don't think he ever did more than regular service to them. Je lamented the end of the model but traded the second on the xs replacement .

Bike desirability is obviously a personal thing. But they are definitely an iconic model. They are also great for outfits and should be very feasible fix ups.
PS, but as with any bike I reckon if the person contemplating the tlc doesn't want the bike to keep they're better off selling as is and getting something they want to keep. I don't think you ever make money, unless you're time is worthless.

Tech Talk / Re: Needle jet shroud height changes? Mikuni VM38.
« on: October 13, 2018, 08:11:53 AM »
I read a couple of years ago a technical report from perhaps Penton originating early 70's about cutting down or slotting the shroud on a bing carb in a sachs 125, changing idle jettng and improving throttle response at low revs. By the time I got spares I couldn't find the article to duplicate

Oh how I wish we had rec rego in NSW........
Another option would be to become a licensed motor dealer and just hang you trader's plate on ya camel back. ????

Tech Talk / Re: Curing handlebar vibration.
« on: September 18, 2018, 08:49:42 AM »
I had some solid aluminium bars that were brilliant at stopping vibration (but were flat bars so did stay long ). I've never seen another pair but I guess thick walled alloy bars will be similar?
