Husqvarna / Re: WR400 ignition timing

I think it's a SEM magneto.

So shouldn't the timing marks reflect a '17' when using a timing light?

When you do static timing, how do you know the points are at the point of opening?

Husqvarna / WR400 ignition timing
« on: December 03, 2017, 10:24:10 PM »
Hi everyone. I went to check the timing on my 84 WR400, expecting the magneto to sit in or around 17 degrees BTDC.  But using my timing light the marks lined up at 0. (actually this mark appears to show a '1' and not a 0).  This is clearly not firing at TDC as the thing makes a lot of power. So I wonder if the mark doesn't refer to degrees BTDC, but refers to degrees from correct timing (ie degrees from 17 BTDC).

Another thing I found unexpected is that the timing doesn't advance with increased revs. Just stays at the same zero mark.

Anyone out there who can make sense of these??

Husqvarna / WR400 horn
« on: August 17, 2017, 10:47:21 PM »
Hi guys. The horn on my 85 WR400 is pretty piss weak....can hear it above the engine.....just. But if the lights are on, the horn doesn't sound at all. I put a cheap after market horn in as an experiment, and it didn't sound at all, even with the lights off.

Could this be a dodgy alternator? Anyone had the same???

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've bought one from eBay so let's see what happens. The theory is certainly sound. Is there a similar item available for the headlight?

Just an observation on my '82 PE250 is that the bushes on the shocks are different sizes left and right.  The drive side has larger bolts than the other side.  Anyone noticed this on their bike?

Thanks a lot guys.  On a related matter, if I wanted to scrap the battery, can I just cut the wires, or do I need to do something else??  Capacitor?

If you go Hagon, beware the length. Mine came 410mm long, which had the bike sitting very high (with heavy springs). I got Them shortened to the standard 400mm and it sits well. But apparently the task of shortening them was most painful.

Suzuki / PE blowing brake lights
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:32:25 PM »
Hi everyone. I have a PE and its lights are very sensitive to revs. If I hit the rear brake during high revs the filament blows. I have a stuffed battery in it, and I wonder if a battery is stuffed then the peak charge isn't absorbed and the lights respond in this way. Alternatively would it be a regulator issue?

Sorted. New VM36 now in place. Have had to modify the slide to accept the standard (10 mm too short) throttle cable. Also had to cut 10mm off the inlet bell to fit the damn thing into the space between the PE air cleaner and the barrel. Tuning time.....
