Suzuki / Re: Making thinner head gaskets
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:16:18 pm »
the instructions with my newly made copper gaskets from the good old USA,recommends heating with a propane torch til dull orange and quenching in room temparature water.

it also goes on to say how you torque it down cold, then warm up motor and torque whist warm, then let it cool and retorque again.
with the XL350 that means pulling the motor back out of the frame and pulling the rocker cover off.
boy, that exhaust pipe was hot :o and it was interesting to see how much a motor can move around with just two mounting bolts holding it in.

Tony, I have only had good dealings with them, but it was only on small items (piston rings) and the postage was fair.

it is usually the spine that is flogged out,I have cut the worn spline off and welded a donor spline from a better shaft on to it .I join it where the shaft is inside the motor so the seal runs on a fresh surface.
I am only a mug electric arc welder and have had no failures using this method.

One suzuki repair caused hassles when I used a honda spline and the next owner could not buy a fine spline suzuki gearlever ;D

the poor old suzuki and lawnmower have seen better days, also two XL175 front wheels but at least I saved the other relics which are not worth much but may come in handy ;)

my wife seems to think that it would have been better to let them all burn :o

General Discussion / Dont leave a fire unattended
« on: August 23, 2008, 08:48:01 pm »
spent the afternoon digging some old frames and bikes out of the blackberries and long grass because they were dissappearing into the wilderness.
then had the bright idea to have a fire to clean up the mess.It all went well so I headed inside to have a beer and some food.
one of my sons came home and said there was a fire in the paddock so I told him I was just out there.

then the second boy arrived home and said there was a huge fire threatening to set the trees on fire and sure enough it had crept along to the stack of old car and bike tyres and was raging.

I rushed down and the seats on two bikes had just ignited from the radiant heat, problem was all the bikes were leaning on each other and could only be pulled out from the fire side :o
there was only one option and that was to sacrifice the TS185 that was closest to the flames and pull the other ones free.
here is a pic of the sacrificial offering,my apoligies to Doc and the other suzifiles

it was a very poor rusted 74 model but I was sure it could have offered some bits and peices

another day,another lesson learnt :-[

thanks for the input gents,

after your experiences and reading the road test I have decided the gain/effort ratio would not be worth it.
I think we will rebuild it to original if it looks feasible

thanks again.

I would be ahead by one win if someone had not pulled a desperate at a  bridport grasstrack and cut me off ;D

you had better be nice to me fatboy or your motor will be resleeved and a XL 125 piston fitted :-*

We welcome you to the gentlemans class MX? and will help you out however we can,no seats or tanks available sorry.

thanks graeme, for that link to the bike test and before I speak nicely to you ;) I will check out just what the motor needs.
I think it would be a shame to butcher it if it can be saved.
Just have to come to terms with mixing fuel and dealing with bing carbies again ::)

I will contact you once I have done the feasability report
