Maico / Re: MAICO Pre-60 Alloy Oval Barrel Blizzard Project.

This little beauty just arrived. YeeHa 8)

The numbers stamped on the frame match the numbers stamped on the ID pate.

This frame to me proves what I had been hoping for, that the second generation of Blizzard frames were indeed being produced en mass out of the factory from sometime during 1959. It has a fabricated steering head instead of the earlier cast steel one. A heavier oval shaped tubing is used for the upper backbone and also the main front down tube. I have spotted several other significant upgrades in regards to geometry and strength failings of the earlier frames.

Well done !
This frame is for the M250B => Behörde. That means government, like army, police, customs authorities etc..
Most of them were produced for the army, because Maico has won a contract with them, against rivals like BMW and DKW.
Production starts in late 1958!
The parents of the Bike are the MC modells of 1957 and so the frame is nearly the same in matters of geometry and strength :)

Just cut the additional parts away and ready ist the MX Bike  :) :) !

The following 1962 X2 framed bike is reputed to be the very mount belonging to the late Jim mcCabe.
If that's the bike Mick it'd be a pretty trick engine, maybe even a bigun'.....326cc.

Biggun with iron barrel is limited to 277ccm = 71mm bore x 70mm hub
If you bore the 71 mm cylinder (it's diffrent to the 250ccm) to 77mm no iron is left for the liner or sleeve or ... how do you call it ?

Calling Marcus.
What is the outside diameter of the forks? At the top.

The tubes are 36'er, that means exact 35,80 mm diamter. In the top clamp they have a konus!

Here are 3 of the 4 typs I know. The first one (1964-65) was also available with iron lower end (tree ??)
And the last one is for the first square barrel Modell with X4 Frame (1968)

ca. 1966-67

Hey Marcus, you wouldn't have a spare tank like the one in the bottom photo sitting on the bare frame that you'd be willing to sell? I need one for my KR which currently has a Ducati Bronco tank fitted. Also, what exactly is a WaBeHa.....is it an aftermarket frame made by Fritz Betzelbacher? I've heard of them but never seen one. If it is I want one ;D.

The tank you are looking for is very very rare in Germany too  :( !
I have just one for the WabeHa (alloy, aftermarket, handmade) and an other one on my MC 196? projekt, that i got in Dezember 2013 from Austria:

But in the 60's they often use tanks from small 50ccm bikes as: Kreidler, Viktoria, Rixe, Rabeneick or else which fits very well:

I have such kind of tank for sale if you are interested in:

Or if you need the big one, you have just to pay for packing and shipping  ;)

...........a 1964 oval barrel 360 that will be fitted to a Metisse frame........

I've seen you are looking for an oval barrel with center exhaust port for this projekt ?!
The Metisse you have seen with such a part is from Germany too and I know it, because I saw it as projekt bike an in the progress....

Note: The cylinder is a modified squarebarrel. They have cut the fins to the oval look ....

Willkommen Marcus. There are a few old Maico members here, I've got two 1970 350 square barrel, one I've had since new, a 1964 oval barrel 360 that will be fitted to a Metisse frame and a rare 250 Motoball Special/KR 250.

@ All: Danke für das herzliche Willkommen :) !  Thanks for the friendly welcome !

@Firko, Mick D .. :
I'm happy to see that there are other nuts out there with the same illness  ;D

I have seen this post here: http://forum.ozvmx.com/index.php?topic=27949.0 , and I think I can give some tipps about frame versions, tanks, forks, engines  (typs of transmission for example),  etc...
Therefore  i'll make some posts in Mick's thread (MAICO Pre-60 Alloy Oval Barrel Blizzard Project)  or what do you mean ..?

Here is my 1964 MC250 Cinemascope, finished in 2013.

Sourcing parts for it take a long time and it was unfinished until Dezember 2012. That was the time the NSU-Museeum called for it for : http://www.zweirad-museum.de/sonderausstellung/2013-maico-moto-cross.html
So i was forced to hurry up a little ;) and it was ready for pickup in march 2013...

I'll get it back in Februar an will do the first ride on it then   ;D

Hello all  :)
I'm from Germany and live near Duesseldorf/Cologne.
My favorite bikes are the pre 1975 bikes from Maico, Husqvarna, Jawa, CZ etc. and I like the older 4 strokes aswell!
For myself I rebuild and ride Maicos of the 50's to 70’s (GS, MX and oldtimer/street bikes).
My first dirtbike was a Maico M250B (military version of the Blizzard), which I found in the neighbourhood. That was 1985 and it was also my first rebuilt.

I rode this 22 years old bike for 3 years and then I interchanged it for an 1967 Maico GS250.

That was the point the Maico-Virus catches me and several typs of Maico and other brands followed.
Here are some of my projekts:

Maico GS 1962 and 1970

WaBeHa Maico 360 1963

I also have 2 Husqvarna projekt bikes, 1x CR400 8-Speed of 1969 and 1x CR360 of 1968 and I love them !  ;D

So I hope I'll have some nice conversation and discussions about vintage dirtbikes here   :D !!

Best regards
Marcus
