Title: '77 VB 250
Post by: All Things 414 on May 28, 2010, 08:54:37 AM
We all go ga-ga over the '77 VB 360 (rightfully so) but has anyone got a '77 VB 250 or at least a picture of one (with the rear frame loop)?
My brother had the '78 VB 250 and was an awesome bike as well however I think the previous years bike must have been a killer.

Anyone?  :-\

There's one sitting unused about 10klm from me. Doubt he will ever sell it although I do ask now and again.
Cheers,

Did they have a different colour tank stripe to that (I thought the stripes on the one pictured meant it was a 360)?

You know how there are some bikes you should have kept? I had one for awhile - even raced it at Barabool for a Viper round. Awesome motor in it and handled well. Felt a bit tall at the rear but if I wasn't such a squid and rode it on the pipe it wouldn't have been noticed. Shoulda kept it. One of the sweetest lookers I reckon.

Same tank stripe Ross, The '78 had a different stripe although again the same on both 250 and 360. Just about everything except cylinder, piston, head, ignition (internal rotor on this model only - VE & VF external), carbie, pipe and 5sp gearbox is inter-changable.

I guess this means that the 'new' possibility you mentioned in a post yesterday is a VB250 then ;)

The '78 VB250/360 had a gold & black stripe as Jared describes like this
(http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae123/montynut/VB250-78.jpg)
Although I did not actually see any in Oz with that stripe. The couple (only two I think) of '78 VBs in NSW I saw had the same stripe as the '77. Not sure if this was somthing that just happened in NSW or did Lyall do some deal with factory similiar to the shipment of blue Cota 172's that landed here because the factory had them available and they did not sell in their intended destination of France  ???.

Gday Ross, from my memory, the 77 250 had the black and green stripes. The 77 360 had the black and yellow stripes. The 78 250 had the black and gold stripes and the 78 360 had the black and yellow stripes.
I would have pictures if you need them.

Regards Stan.

Thanks Stan. Yeah the '78 250 that my brother had, had the black and gold stripes, same as the one pictured above. It also had the very tastfull fiberglass airbox/raceplates made by a local Montesa man (it was Brookesy's old bike).  ;)

Hi Stan,
I think you may be correct about the '78 VB360 black and yellow stripes as even magazine reports of the period show that colour. I can not find one picture of a '78 360 with other than the black and yellow stripe.

The '77 250 I am pretty sure also had the yellow and black as my mate picked up a VB250 in the crate from Ryan's in Sydney in January '77 the same day as I collected a VB360. We took them home and completed assembly that afternoon. I am all but certain both my 360 and his 250 had identical tank stripes. I can not find any photos of VB250's with other than the yellow and black.

'77 VB250 (only mod I can see is the strange extension of the pipe exit)

Gday montynut, yeah you are probably right. Must have been thinking of the green stripes on 77 "VB" cans  :D :D :D
I also have a couple of photo's you might be interested in that I took in 78.

Love that antidive on the '78 250 ;) Would never have thought the Monty brakes would be powerful enough to make it work  ::) My rule of thumb was to brake at the same point as the Jap bikes and you automantically out braked them because the Monty brakes were lets say less than ideal  :o

I have to say I like those VB side covers on both bikes very neat application of the stupid ACU side number plate rule :)

Yeah i was just wondering the same thing.
What are the shocks on that 250?
Are you sure those shots aren't from '79? there's a '79 A5 KX in the background.

Hi JohnnyO, the guy on the 250 is Peter Christian from Stawell. I am not sure of those shocks but he did run some Bilsteins around that time. It is Definitely late 78 and thats when I took delivery of that first  KX250A5.

We made those sidecover/number plates to comply with the new rules and ended up selling a heap of sets to Lyall O'brien at the time.

Was that a 77 or 78 model VB? We would have been happy to have run the VF sidecovers but it was a couple of years too early for the VB's.

I can't remember where I stole it from but I grabbed it thinking I might make a copy the side covers for my VB - I needed it for inspiration ;) :).

Graeme, I'm not positive but somewhere I think I still have the alloy patterns that we made for the sidecovers and the fibreglass moulds also.

Yesterday l was in Pakington Street standing on the corner looking at the old montesa motorcycle Shop (Lyall O`Brien ) and l paused there for a while and my memory went  back as far as 1967-68. l could still see lyall standing there and Alf, gary. But in the window there where brand new clock work orange bikes 250, 360 trials bikes, in 1972 when l bought my first scrambler a grey tank Montesa 125 $500 l was so excited, l though how sad it has to end. Lyall loved is Montesa. Lyall and Gary don`t realise the memory`s they left us and we will keep them forever. I raise my class and say cheers Lyall.

Yes I too remember peering into that shop glass on our trips back from the beach. The last bike I remember seeing there was a 360 H7. Man it looked cool!
Happy days..... :P
