Because my flat tracker has a brakeless spool front hub which I believe is illegal according to MoMs, I find that I now have to lace up a braked 19" front wheel. Now my dilemna.....

I've got 2 19'' Carlilse and one Pirelli MT53 flat track tyres but they're a bit old and as hard as a teak coffee table. I have access to a new 350-19 Mitas speedway tyre and was wondering how they work mounted on the front? I looked at buying a new Maxxis S pattern DTR-1 tyre but even the narrowest 19 incher is too wide to fit between my fork legs. The 375-19 SW-07 Mitas fits nicely but my mate Jonesy reckons they might be a bit iffy on the front. Another option I found while googling is the Chen Sing T180f 350-19 which has an almost identical tread pattern to the Dunlop K70, Pirelli and Carlilse. Anyone got any ideas?

The Dunlop K180 is not a bad choice, I used them for a while.

Does anybody handle the Dunlop K180 here? I was told that they've been discontinued. I've used them myself John and agree that they're not too bad.
Has anyone ever used that stuff the go cart and motard blokes use to soften the tyres?

I have just walked into Team Moto store at Maroochydore and ordered K180's over the counter.

Or get some wider clamps and go the maxxis

there are 2 mitas speedway tyres. can never remeber but one of them the Sw05 or the SW07 has more or less slits in it and a multi direcetion flat wall, the other has the tread going over onto the side wall, that one which ever it is i have on a spooler front and its been fine. the flat sided one i would use.

Last time i looked the moms only said one working brake, under the classic longtrack i think.

you have needed 2 brakes for 2012 season

I have a few, I also have 300x21. One is on its way to you FOC for services to VMX.
If you are going to race the bike at Nepean or Barleigh Ranch the IRC 300x19 Farm Knobbly is a far better choice. Distributed by Ficeda, Yamahas Accessory Division, IRC should be available at any Yamaha shop,
Trust me they work good,
Don't run the Midas Speedway on the front they walk too far off line,

Shit..I totally missed this last post so you can imagine my surprise when a 19" K180 Dunlop turns up unannounced at Casa del Firko this arvo? It had me buggered as to where it had come from so here I am back tracking on my posts and lo and behold I found SON's above post. I was in Goulburn at the Blues Festival when the post went up so I missed it..........Thanks so much Graeme, it's just what I ~~want~~ need for the current flat track build....a big improvement on the old Pirelli MT53 that currently lives on the rim. If there's anything I can do......you know the drill

Try soaking the old tyres in either brake fluid or a trans seal reviver. It's both designed to bring rubber back to life--soften and revitalise.
Spray some on when the ''blue groove'' is down late in the day.

I hear what you're saying EML but what would stop me from having a go at something like that, is if you got the proceedure wrong and the tyre delaminated or fell apart at speed.

Firkos tyre is New, it doesn't need softening, for our tracks they need cutting or grooving.

I didn't mean actually soaking as in submersing the tyre, rather just get a spray bottle and give it a coating and see if it improves.

I'll try it on my old Pirelli MT53 and the NOS 18" Bridgestone wet weather rear tyre I've had laying around the place for a while. With Temora being an oil surface it might be a good option. As far as tyre cutting, it's a bit of a lost art for sure but it's well worth it if you know what you're doing. I used a Michelin wet for years that had worked really poorly until I cut it. Once cut the tyre worked like it was coated in glue, even when we finally got down to canvas. Tony Garrard has been cutting the Maxxis tyres on his kids Hondas with good results so Jonesy's just had him do the Maxxis tyres for Black Betty, his ATK and the new flat tracker. I might get him to have a look at the K180. Some anonymous American has cut the Carlilse 18" currently on the flat tracker rear so I'll give it the softener treatment and see how it works at Broadford, as well as the Mitas trials tyre (and Bridgy wet previously mentioned).

Mitas have flat track tyres 140/80-19 and 130/90-19 with rrp of $199 & $189

They have a repetitive kidney shape tread, its a bit hard from the pic to see how open the tread is.

No I can't put a pic up as I am tech challenged at this point but may be able to email it to someone.

GoldenTyre have flat track tyres as well. Just found out about the Mitas ones today, are they going to bring them to Australia? Have seen a few photo's and they are a little different but thats cool they might be better! DOT legal too. good to see more tyre manufacterers making this type of tyre.

Steve...do you mean Italian Golden Tyre or Chinese Golden Boy tyres? I couldn't find anything when I googled Golden Tyre but came up with these Golden Boy beauties from China which are marketd under the following brands
kinda,golden boy,feichi, kenda, cst, diamond, great runner....apparently all the same tyre. The tread's similar to the Dunlop K70, Pirelli MT53 and Carlilse and is available in 19" & 18" sizes from what I can translate.

I have some new Maxxis, Goodyears are now branded Dunlop,
for oil the Pirelli/Copies will be Ok just don't go nuts,

Totally agree Firko but I'm convinced today's riders are better behaved than those from past generations, as with today's Footy stars if they slip up, the word is out within 5 mins.

I'm a bit gun shy to enter into another tyre discussion but here goes anyway..........For those who want to use the old Dunlop K70, Kenda produces this almost identical tyre. I'm not sure if they're available in Oz but I reckon they might be. I'm still shell shocked that you can't use these tyres at this years Temora Nats. I've got a very similar Carlilse that's been suitably softened mounted on my flat tracker so I'll be seeing how it goes compared to the Mitas trials tyre I've mounted on another wheel at Broadford this weekend.

They are a K265 kenda and are availiable here but my CTA price list shows them only in sizes 3.25/18 and 3.50/18. RRP $72 & $75
The Kenda product catologue shows a 3.50/19 in the list.
You might be able to get them on the net somewhere.
Heidenau K34 dont look too bad but might be a bit hard.

The tyres on the Knight Honda in the US are Shinko Radial 19'', I tried to start with a known tyre, only used it a couple of times, outgated the US flat-track rubber but the races are too long and tracks too wide, the fast guys rounded me up. Used one on the front of my 650 Yamaha at Temora to comply with OEM rule, seemed to work.
