Whitsunday Classic MX 2009
« on: November 30, 2008, 03:11:36 PM »
With the Nats on early August does anyone know when this event will be held? And have I heard correctly that the Suzuki brothers will be there this year? After CD6 in June myself and Karen want to come over again and head up north maybe flying in the weekend of the Nats to watch and then drive up and have a holiday but with a vmx meeting thrown in I know for sure that it will keep Karen happy having me out of her way to do some shopping.

Ron have you guys up that way made any plans yet and are the visitors coming from the rising sun?

I think that the Whitsunday Classic is the weekend after the Vintage Nats , but I will have to double check . I have heard that the Japanese guys ( including Torao Suzuki ) are coming back this year , but I will check with Ron on that . I don't think that Ron owns a computer , so talking to him direct is the only way .

I talked to Ron Single on the phone recently & he said that the Whitsunday Classic is on 15/16th of August , which should make it the weekend after the Conondale Nats . There is supposed to be a group of  Japanese riders coming again , hopefully including Torao Suzuki . Ron's number is 0429451475 & he said he is happy to talk to anyone wanting information about the event .

If anyone from the southern states were travelling up to the Whitsundays after Conondale , I think it would save a lot of time by heading inland at Rockhampton on the way home . A couple of us drove down to CD4 , at Broadford , from NQ ( about a 6500 km round trip ). We went through Sydney via the coast road on the way down ( because we had a few things to pick up & drop off along the way ) & came back via the inland route , crossing back into Queensland at Goondiwindi . Seemed like we saved a lot of hours on the way home , but you have to have a big fuel tank or carry drums of fuel as most of the fuel stations were shut in the middle of the night . We had to drain the fuel out of the bikes in the trailer at one stage , to get us through . I think that most GPS systems these days would give a route plan to track you the quickest way .

Jetstar has flights into Proserpine daily.  A short drive to the track from there, against more flights daily into Mackay, but an hour & a half drive.  Prices cheap as chips currently. Brisbane to Proserpine on Fri 14 August from $79 with checked baggage 20kg, Sat 15 from $69.

Some companies are there in Proserpine.  Check out Yellow Pages online, Avis & Hertz have offices at the airport for cars, don't know about campers though.  Local numbers are -
Hertz - 0749 464687
Avis - 0749 466318

I hope everyone has a great time!  I can't get there this year, but the Nats have used up my VMX budget for 2009.  All the best for the members of the Whitsunday Club, you attract the genuine enthusiasts, and always come up with something new each year!

All the best,
Mike
