My mate is rebuilding his CR500 short rod model. Getting a new rod kit from the states.
Who in Aus is the 'Man' to split and replace a Honda crank without wrecking the cans?

Mate the caliper pistons are 'seized' that's why the lever is hard but the brakes are crap.Seen it heaps.
Why? because when a bikes sits around the brake fluid turns to mud and crap gets behind the seals pressing then against the pistons and making them tight, they aren't really seized, just uber tight.
Cure ? Easy just get a new caliper seal kit, they are really cheap and as far as I know they fit Honda CR's 125/250/500 from '84 to '01 or later- same seals.
You don't even have to remove the brake hose, use the lever to pump out the pistons-clean the caliper (spotless) fit new seals, (lube seals after words) install clean pistons.
Hold the caliper above the master cylinder to let the air go up, put something like a block of wood between the pistons and caliper body, bleed in that position.
Refit the caliper and ride.
My just finished '87 CR500 resto.

You can still get the OEM 'Flash Red' guards from Japan look up "JP parts" send in a quote, easy as but they don't look as good as the originals plastics for some reason? too glossy.
I kept my original guards and just cleaned them up. They match the tank better.
I got a set of UFO Flash Red '87 side covers for my 500, 250 are the same and they are as good as OEM ( I have both plastics).
'87 side covers were made for one year only so they are hard to find now.
UFO leave that maier crap far behind.
If you can't tell the difference between Fighting red and flash red your colour blind and they look tacky when mismatched on a bike IMHO.

Mate I have an '87 CR500 and tried a later model '89-2001 kicker and its terrible.
All wrong, hits the pipe, won't sit in enough, your leg hits it etc.
What will work is a CRF150 kicker and best of all they're available and cheap.
CRF150 kicker V '87 CR500 kicker and it should be easier to kick because of the better angle.

I'm starting a rebuild on an '87 cr500.
Wanted to run it up the road just to make sure everything worked before ripping it apart.
First attempt I snapped the foot piece off the kicker
Fitted a later model cr500 kicker on for starting dutys.
It's been sitting around for a while as the air filter was bone dry,muffler packing was blown out.
So I stripped and cleaned the carby,oiled the air filter/fuel and repacked the muffler.
Started easy enough.

Hi mate
I did a mates '85 cr500 caliper with a seized pin last week.
The allen head was rounded so i drilled down into the pin shaft and inserted/hammered an 'ezyout' into the hole.
Still no move , even with a big shifter on the end of the 'ezyout'! (careful -you do not want to snap off an 'ezyout' in the hole :'()
So I dropped the caliper into near boiling water for 10 mins,let the alloy soak in some heat and expand.
Tried again -and out she came!

The advantage of using the later two piece cover is that it's made of alloy and not magneisium and will Never rot out again.
It also holds more oil because the later 500's had more clutch plates it has a cover so the clutch can be accessed without removing the whole cover.
The only modification required is to reroute one hose.

My boys give them a hammering,the eldest ( is learning to use a clutch on MR50 (very proud moment)
