Tech Talk / Amal carbi
« on: August 26, 2011, 06:22:57 PM »
Would this carbi be ok to run on the Greeves 380 dirt tracker I am building. I know they were used on speedway/short circut bikes back in the day and this one has the twin bowl setup ready to fit, just not sure how it would perform on a 2 stroke.

Tech Talk / WHY
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:50:31 PM »
Have a 1983 Husky 250CR and its missing a nut from the swing arm.  So here's the question 'why' would they make a 12mm swing arm bolt and use a .1mm pitch thread for the nut?  I know the answer most give is so we have to buy the nuts from them  and pay a premium for them.  You can't get them through your local bolt shop because they don't keep them and they can't even find a listing on them.  But surely the profit they make on the few they sell must be offset somewhat by the extra they must pay for a non standard size thread in the first place.

General Discussion / What type of van
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:59:12 PM »
Going to get rid of my old hilux ute it's getting old now and not that reliable.  Question is what to buy as a replacement?  I have decided on a van, that I can get at least a couple of bikes in and also sleep in if needed maybe at race meeting or swap meet,  also fuel economy is a factor and maybe a fold up rear seat.  VW transporters look ok but most between late 90s to early 2000s dont have air/con fitted.  Toyotas? do they have room inside, Merc Vito,  Hyundai, Ford Transit what sort on mpg and performance any ideas.  What do you drive?

Tech Talk / 70mm Aluminium pipe
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:06:30 AM »
Trying to buy some 70mm aluminium pipe to make mufflers. None of the major suppliers keep that size yet you see it used on bike mufflers and in turbo intercoolers etc, so someone must make it.  If I buy it from a turbo supplier then it becomes far to expensive (about $20 a foot) so if I cant buy it I'll just have to split some 80mm, roll it to 70mm and reweld it but that takes time and being retired I suppose time is something I do have plenty of. Or so I am told.

Honda / QA50
« on: July 07, 2011, 05:26:18 PM »
I have been offered 2 mini bikes, but dont know how much to they might be worth.  The first is a early 70s QA50 Honda with the triangle shaped seat and about paint tin size wheels, the second is MR50 Honda a couple of years later model.  Both are complete and running and in good condition.  so I suppose I just need some idea of the value in this condition or when restored.

General Discussion / Jawa parts
« on: June 30, 2011, 12:45:56 PM »
I placed an ad in a local free newspaper wanting older motocross bikes and or parts.  This morning I had a phone call from a bloke in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area who has a couple of 250cc twin port Jawa motors and maybe some other bits. He is going to pull them out and give me a ring back later in the week.  I can check them out (just to make sure they are not CZ) so if anyone is interested in Jawa bits give me a ring 0249912255 and I will let you know what he has and how much he wants for it.

General Discussion / Gatton Swap
« on: May 28, 2011, 10:48:16 PM »
Making my first trip up to Gatton swap in Oct this year,  Had planned on travelling in time to arrive at about lunch time friday when the show ground is supposed to open.  Their web site says they wont allow any trading before 6am saturday morning but talking to a couple of mates who go every year tell me by then half the good stuff is already sold.    So any of you blokes go to this swap? is this what happens I know at most swaps if you have a stall then you get first pick, be it right or wrong thats what normally happens but the organisers insist this will be policed and will not happen this year
      Tell us what you think.

Tech Talk / Dishwasher for parts
« on: May 02, 2011, 11:20:36 AM »
This has most likely been discussed before but....
Does anyone have a dishwasher in their workshop for cleaning parts.
Do the parts especially aluminium discolour after using the dishwasher.
If they do is it the detergent used, or is it the heat of the water.
If it is the heat, and it can be turned down will this make it much less affective as a cleaner.
Do you add degreaser to the machine like in a parts washer or spray them, let them soak and use the washer to do the final cleanup.
I have been offered a dishwasher but have to weigh up if the value of it overrides the hassle of finding a spot for it and plumbing it in.

Tech Talk / CZ Hubs
« on: April 18, 2011, 09:36:59 PM »
Has anyone on this forum had any CZ hubs powder coated with a colour that looks like the original and not a really gold colour like most of the powder coaters seem to turn out.   If so can they let us know the colour and powder code they used.   If I can get the correct powder then I can do the job myself, save heaps of time travelling to deliver to and then pick up from the shop.  I would also in hearing from any members who do their own coating that have successfully blended powders together to create a colour which is otherwise not available.

Tech Talk / Starter rolls
« on: March 30, 2011, 05:37:26 PM »
Building a set of starter rolls using a 9 inch grinder to run it.  By my calculations if I use a 50mm roller driven directly from the grinder. The roller will spin at a speed of about 60 kph,  this will mean that the bike would need to be started in a higher gear.  Can anyone who has one or has used one let me know if this is the case?

  The calculations I used are ( Roll 50mm or 0.05 of a mtr times Pi (3.1416) =0.157mtr x6500 revs of the grinder = 1021 mtrs per minute x 60 to convert to hours = 61261mtrs or 61.261kph.

I think that 50mm is as small as I could go with the roller and still get drive onto the tyre.  If anyone can give me any additional information it would be appreciated.

Bike Transport / Melbourne to Newcastle area
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:18:38 PM »
Anyone travelling north from Melbourne I need to get a frame, forks, wheel and a couple of boxes of bits to the Newcastle area or even to Sydney would be a big help.  I can help out with fuel money.

General Discussion / clearing bank cheque
« on: March 08, 2011, 08:50:06 PM »
Sold one of my huskys last week and the buyer (a good bloke) has sent me a bank cheque as payment.  Now you would think that a bank cheque would be cleared immediately.  I mean he has to have the funds in his account to get it in the first place,  but no my bank has told me it will take 3 days to clear,  thats the same as a personal cheque, so why the hell do we have to pay for the bloody things?  I could pay a $20 fee to speed it up and that can still take 2 days.  The buyer doesn't have paypal and my bank tells me that even using a bank transfer can also take up to 2 days.  It seems these banks have us bent over the log and we hope they dont drive it into us but we have no control over whether they do or don't they are a law unto themselves.
