KLX250 rear wheels.
« on: August 16, 2009, 09:40:11 PM »
I have three rear wheels.
The two ugly ones are definitely KLX wheels. They have six bolts holding the rear sprocket on.

The pretty one has four bolts holding the rear sprocket on. Is this an earlier/later KLX wheel, or something else (I'm thinking maybe mid~late 70s RM??). None of the spokes are the 'semi straight pull' type, unlike the KLX wheels which has semi-straight pulls on the sprocket side.

I can get pics if needed.

Haven't thought about selling.
The rim matches the front wheel (which is definitely KLX), so I'd be kind of keen to keep the rim...  :-\

I have nearly three bikes worth of stuff - some good, some crap. The loose plan is to build up my bike, keep a pile of spares, and sell off the left-overs - I imagine that there'd be a nearly complete basket case bike and some other bits - which would include an ugly KLX rear wheel.

I wonder if a KDX200 rear wheel would fit?

Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll get a pic of the KLX wheel tomorrow.

I have spent many a long hour pondering the KLX rear wheel situation ! Mine is starting to show signs of needing a rebuild.
The wheels from the KDX175 are the same. I am running one of those at the moment.
The rears are the same as -

KX125-A6 80 125 KX125
KX125-A7 81 125 KX125
KDX175-A1 80 175 KDX175
KDX175-A2 81 175 KDX175
KDX175-A3 82 175 KDX175
KLX250-A1 79 250 KLX250
KLX250-A2 80 250 KLX250

Moving up to the KDX250, they are slightly different, although can be made to fit.
I have just bought a rear from a twinshock KDX400 to play with. The hub is a larger diameter, but fits in the KLX250 without any problems. The rear brake is also bigger. Not that these things go fast enough to need anymore stopping power.
The weakest part of the rear is the damn spokes ! They are just not big enough to cope. Well, not down here in rocky Devon (UK).

Hey Grouty
I'm in Herefordshire
I got a KLX swing arm to go in a DR400 twinshock but I need a longer wheel axle, the DR's about  15mm short.
I also want a KLX.
Was at the Beacons Rally at the weekend. There was me and an xl/xr185 and a couple of modded 800GS bikes.
Really muddy
Can you help?
Does anyone know what other bikes use that axle?

Will have a look at the Zedder software when I get home later.
But I am guessing that the axle will be unique to the KLX !

The rear wheel spindle (axle) also fits.....

Part # = 41068-4002

KDX250-A1 80 250
KDX250-B1 81 250
KLX250-A1 79 250
KLX250-A2 80 250
KLX250-B1 81 250
KLX250-C1 82 250
KDX400-A1 79 390
KDX400-A2 80 390
KDX420-B1 81 420
KDX450-A1 82 420

The axle on the KDX175 will be the same diameter as they use the same hub. Except the one with a cush drive.
New axles are listed on www.cmsnl.com at a ridiculous price.

Good luck Cloggy.... if you find a cheap source for them please let me know.
Mud plugging with an old XR is good, doing it with an old KLX250 is brilliant. Most were fitted as standard with a traction control system !............. it's called "no power"

Thanks very much indeed both of you.
 I've managed to get one.
However I'm still trying to source swingarm spindle bits.
The KLX spindle [which I don't have] appears to be 1mm smaller than the DR.
The assembled bearings and spacers don't seem to be standard, I've just got 2 needle rollers and 2 sleeves.
Prices seem extreme, so I'm wondering whether to have a tube welded to the centre of the swingarm spindle housing, getting the needle bearing housing reamed out a touch and bung in the assembly from the DR. I don't like not being able to pump fresh grease into the bearings, not for the wet welsh hills.
I had a nice PE175. Lovely bike but I couldn't bond with the noise. I just like 4 strokes. I thought a KLX might be similarly more manageble [than the 300lb DR] for extreme conditions.
I tried to buy a chain guard [round the pivot] from Bike Bandit, but for some reason my card wasn't acceptable. Probably just as well since carriage was over twice the purchase price. Any sources of old klx stock in the UK or Europe?
I  need a klx chain slider to go round the swing arm pivot.

The plastic chain sliders are a bit like hen's teeth !
I managed to pick a NOS one up early this year from fleabay in the US. There was one on there last week.
The part number is  55020-1035

Look after the rear chain adjusters on the swingarm too. I had the last ones from Corby Kawasaki a few months ago.

Both Corby Kawasaki and Cradley Kawasaki carry a fairly large stock of genuine NOS parts for the KLX. They are not advertised, so sort out the part numbers and give them a ring. A lad called Nathan at Corby is extremely helpful.

I am in need of a stator plate, flywheel and outer cover for my 81 B1 model if anyone has a spare.

Thanks for that
Sod's law it was last week.
Looks like I'm going to get the swingarm bushed + grease nipples to match the suzuki spindle and sleeves. It's got to be narrowed about 6mm too, so I'll probably put the DR400 slider on  if that'll work. If not I'll go to OROUK and sort out a slider that can be made to.

Just got a chain guide assembly [all but top block] from Corby Kawasaki. Possibly the last one but they were very very helpful and said it was Bryan not Nathan who knows the old stuff. Bryan was who they went off and got and he was brilliant.
